Bosses baulk at sending staff for English test (via ST iPhone App)

FOREIGN workers in the hotel, food and beverage, and retail industries must clear the Service Literacy Test (SLT) in order to get work permits as skilled workers, on top of having certificates for the relevant job skills. Malaysians are exempt from the test. A worker who attains 'skilled' status will cost his boss $100 less in foreign worker levy. Employers now pay $170 a month for a skilled work permit holder versus a levy of $270 for an unskilled worker. From next month, the levy will go up to $180 for skilled workers and $280 for unskilled workers. Training courses to prepare foreign workers for the test, which is not compulsory, can range from $250 to $1,000 per head and run for a period of between 15 hours and two months.
