Malaysia steps up wildlife conservation efforts - Channel NewsAsia: #orangutans

BORNEO : Malaysia wants to ensure better wildlife protection with its newly passed Wildlife Conservation Act. Under the new act, which comes into effect at the end of this month, wildlife sanctuaries and zoos will be licensed and regulated. But animal rights activists said there is still a lack of enforcement. There are over 30 zoos in Malaysia and conditions at some of the privately run ones were appalling. A video taken by a visitor at a private zoo has triggered public outcry. An adult orangutan was seen puffing away after being given a cigarette by visitors. Shenaaz Khan, president of the Malaysian Animal Welfare Society said: "That's very disturbing. I don't think it's just Malaysia; it's a global problem. The mindset of the people, they like to see animals behaving like human beings. That's wrong with our zoos in this country. A lot of them in this country are hoaxes...
