SINGAPORE - Brandon Ong was someone his schoolmates might call a "floater" - someone who drifted through his days indifferent to how he was faring in school. A Normal (Academic) student at Serangoon Garden Secondary School, the 16-year-old sheepishly recalled his lack of motivation during his Secondary 1 and 2 years, where he failed tests and exams one after another. "I just didn't care about my studies," he said. But his attitude would undergo an about-turn and he surprised even himself when the N-Level results were released yesterday - he scored nine points, placing him among the top scorers in his cohort. Although there were big changes taking place in his life around the time he entered secondary school - his parents underwent a divorce when he was in Primary 6 - he said this did not affect him and attributed his lacklustre grades to his lack of drive.
