Republic Poly hopes to Ignite! the local music scene

Rock music and education institutions: Traditionally, schools have viewed rock music with suspicion, due to previously held associations with a rock 'n' roll lifestyle. Times, however, have changed. There's Glee, for one. But outside of TV, Republic Polytechnic (RP) has managed to marry the seemingly disparate worlds in a highly practical manner with the local indie rock festival called the Ignite! Music Festival. This year marks the fourth instalment, and unlike some other school events that cater only to the student population, this festival is open to the public. Ganesh Kalyanam, director of The Republic Cultural Centre (TRCC), explained that a confluence of factors back in 2008 made the idea of RP hosting a indie rock festival "almost irresistible".
