The owner of an Indian food stall who passed off beef as mutton has had his licence revoked and been fined $3,000. Shaul Hameed M. Hussien, who used to operate the Haja Maideen Mee Stall at ABC Brickworks Market and Food Centre in Bukit Merah, is now banned from holding any food retail licence. The man, who had been holding a stall licence since 1974, will also no longer be allowed to work as a food handler or market stall assistant. The Haja Maideen Mee Stall was shut down yesterday. A statement from the National Environment Agency (NEA) said that it had investigated the stall after receiving feedback from the public on Feb 18. NEA tested samples of mutton mee goreng (fried mee) from the stall, and found that beef had been used instead. Subsequent samples of mutton dishes from the stall did not find any adulterated meat.
