From quirky cafes to old-school bak kut tehs, here are the best eats along #RangoonRoad:
The original, Founder Bak Kut Teh at Balestier has been dishing out bowls of its Teochew-style pork rib soup to fans, many of them celebrities, since 1978; and this outlet is no different. Made using fresh pork and a special blend of pepper and spices, the soup has a delectable peppery quality married together with sweet pork-y goodness. This air-conditioned branch at Rangoon Road is run by the founder’s daughter Chui Chui and her daughter Cathryn, and serves a similar menu with their signature Bak Kut Teh (from $7), Braised Pig Trotters (from $9) and Salted Vegetables ($4). According to Cathryn, Founder Bak Kut Teh has started franchising its restaurants, but her family will still run this outlet. They are in the midst of re-branding. So don’t be alarmed if the space has a new name when you next visit.
