The relationship between teacher and disciple, or guru–shishya tradition, in Indian culture is very important. The guru assumes the role of a parent and mentor to the disciple, who is often sent to live with him or her at an early age to learn and practice devotion. The guru therefore plays an important role in shaping the mentality of the disciple, based on the philosophy that he or she imparts. This exhibition presents a set of highly intimate portraits of the most eminent dance gurus of the South Indian tradition.
