Recently, SMRT was fined for the major train breakdown that disrupted the evening commute for many Singaporeans on Jul 7. The full amount of the fine will go to the Public Transport Fund, which helps needy families cope with fare adjustments. However, there have been some questions over the disbursement of the funds. What's going on? On Sep 23, SMRT was fined a whopping $5.4 million , the highest penalty on a rail operator so far, for causing the massive train breakdown that happened in July this year. The North-South and East-West Lines broke down during the evening peak period, affecting an estimated 413,000 commuters . This makes one wonder, should the fine be used to compensate those affected instead? The fine imposed on SMRT will go to the Public Transport Fund, which reduces the impact of fare adjustments by providing transport vouchers on the needy. It is co-funded ...
