Our reader says we must ditch the 'I'd-rather-not-know-since-I'd-die-anyway belief' when it comes to fighting cancer.

MR ALVIN Choo offered valuable insights in his letter yesterday ('Spotting cancer early is easier said than done'). Cancer is not the dreaded scourge that it is - killing more people in Singapore than any other disease - without good reason. As pointed out by Mr Choo, very often, early symptoms are vague. Worse, the minute there are symptoms, many intestinal, stomach and pancreatic cancers (just to name a few) are already at the late stage with poor prognosis for cure. Yet, these are not good reasons to capitulate in our fight against cancer. Proven effective screening procedures like mammograms, stool tests for occult blood, barium enemas or colonoscopies, serological tests for cancer markers, Pap smears and even simple chest X-rays will efficaciously detect some of the most common and deadly cancers in time for a complete cure.
