NSP secretary-general Hazel Poa told The Straits Times yesterday that such a requirement would ensure that candidates are not only independent of political influences but also seen to be so. Singapore's Constitution currently requires candidates not to be members of any political party on Nomination Day, in recognition of the president's role as a non-partisan, unifying head of state.
