S'pore win 37 medals at Special Olympics

SINGAPORE : Singapore won a total of 37 medals at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece - five more than the previous Games in 2007. In all, the 46 athletes raked in 12 gold, 13 silver and 12 bronze medals. The team received a warm welcome when they returned home on Thursday morning. Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Halimah Yacob, was also present to receive them. The Special Olympics are for adults and children with intellectual disabilities. And this year, Singapore attained gold in categories like aquatics, athletics and bowling. Singapore also took part in the half-marathon for the first time - winning gold and silver. Tan Too Sheng won the gold medal while Huang Kia Song won the silver. Meanwhile, the seven-a-side football team secured gold after beating Chile 3-2 in a penalty shootout.
