Mindef says the use of iPads "does not replace physical, 'out-in-the-field' training." #ipadsforsaf

TABLET computers are used only in training institutes to enhance the serviceman's learning experience ('The SAF soldier's latest weapon - the iPad'; June 27). Learning on tablet computers does not replace physical, 'out-in-the-field' training. In fact, there will be more time for physical and practical training because our servicemen can now acquire theoretical knowledge and skills at their own pace with the use of tablet computers. By consistently adopting information technology to improve teaching methods, the training of our servicemen has also become more cost-effective. Since 2009, Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) servicemen at the Basic Military Training Centre, Specialist Cadet School and Officer Cadet School have been using laptops to carry out self-directed learning, for subjects such as weapon handling, individual field craft, first-aid and training safety.
