Children no longer enjoy playing outdoors: UK research

LONDON - A new report shows that children no longer enjoy the same simple pleasures as their parents with one-third never having climbed a tree and one in 10 unable to ride a bicycle. While 72 per cent of today's parents prefer playing outside, only 40 per cent of today's children would swap time in front of the television or computer for outdoor play. Experts say that modern day children are missing out on vital experiences because they do not spend enough time having fun in the open air and may become dysfunctional adults. The research, by Savlon and campaign group Play England, also revealed that the amount of playing children do outside is now being restricted by over protective parents who often are also too inhibited to join in.
