(TODAY) Hundreds gather to celebrate Peranakan culture

SINGAPORE - With many of them clad in colourful traditional Peranakan garb, some 550 people gathered yesterday to celebrate the vibrancy of the Peranakan culture. They were at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel to attend the Peranakan Ball, a fund-raiser to mark the association's 111th anniversary. Former Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan, who attended the ball with his wife Mary, was the event's guest of honour. Dr Tan did not speak about his bid for the Presidential Election in his address in the ballroom. But Baba Alvin Yapp, the event's emcee and organiser, told MediaCorp: "We feel happy. If there's any awareness or publicity for the Peranakan culture, it is good for us. So if our President is Peranakan, it'll be great."
