Over 5,000 take part in western S'pore's first major running event.

SINGAPORE: Over 5,000 people participated in western Singapore's first major running event, the Jurong Lake Run. Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said the event, aimed at youths, will become a signature event every year. Flagging of the event was the People's Association's Chief Executive and Returning Officer for the recent General Election, Yam Ah Mee. The event was organised by the Association and the Taman Jurong Community Sports Club. Runners could choose between a 10-kilometre competitive race or a five-kilometre fun run. Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who is also an MP for Jurong GRC, was at the event handing out prizes. Mr Tharman said: "The competitive runners were very enthusiastic.
