S M Jaleel Foundation pledges S$1m a year for needy children

SINGAPORE: One million dollars every year. That is the pledge from local businessman and philanthropist, Mr S M Jaleel, who set up a foundation in his name on Sunday. The S M Jaleel Foundation was launched by President S R Nathan and Mr S M Jaleel. More than half a million dollars were also given out to various charities. The foundation is managed by Mr S M Jaleel and a panel of directors which includes former Senior Minister of State Zainul Abidin Rasheed. A school drop-out at 16, Mr Jaleel rose from being a construction worker to become a successful businessman. At the launch, there was a surprise birthday cake for President Nathan, who celebrated his birthday last Sunday on July 3. The foundation will focus on helping mainly children.
