Television may be game-changer

The pace of the race to the Istana has quickened. With about six weeks to go to the Presidential Election (PE), the hopefuls have ramped up their pre-election campaigning. Thus far, it has been cordial and diplomatic. Mr Tan Kin Lian and Dr Tony Tan submitted their applications for the Certificate of Eligibility last Thursday. On Friday, the Prime Minister's Office issued a statement addressing the campaigning, directed as much at the presidential hopefuls and their supporters as at Singaporeans. For the former, it provides guidelines and information; for the latter, it is the second published statement with a public education dimension (after Law Minister K Shanmugam's statement incorporating the Attorney-General's Chambers' explanation on the constitutional powers of the Elected President).
