Singapore-based Lianhe Zaobao recently published a thought-provoking commentary on the Punggol East by-election. The commentary pointed out that Singapore voters did not choose only an elite leader, but also someone who truly understands them. “The elite team lacks the ability of truly understanding the people, as well as an effective way to communicate,” it wrote. I believe that estrangement is inevitable when a country is ruled by an elite team. How would the elites cast aside their pride and get along with the general public?
