Our reader says restaurants which impose a service charge for takeaway orders are abusing the service charge system.
RECENTLY, I went to a restaurant to order some pastries for takeaway and was surprised when a service charge was imposed. I inquired with the restaurant owner and was told that the service charge was meant to cover the 'takeaway cost'. I was appalled. Aren't service charges meant for services rendered by staff when consumers dine in the restaurant? Are there any checks or rules to make sure service charges imposed are redistributed to the service staff and not kept by the owner as part of profit? It looks like some restaurant owners are abusing the service charge system.
