200 million year old fossils were on its way to black market dealers before being seized in Colombia.
BOGOTA - A CACHE of some two dozen fossils up to 200 million years old and destined for the black market have been found at the airport in the southern Colombian city of Florencia, police said on Tuesday. The police report said the fossils were part of the 'skeletal remains of early mammals and reptiles that inhabited the Andean region,' and also included the jaw of a dinosaur. The Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History and the Colombian Institute of Geology and Mining say they determined that the remains belonged to the Mesozoic and the Cretaceous period, which puts them at 150 million to 200 million years old. Police say fossils are highly sought after by collectors and dealers, not only locally but internationally. Their value is incalculable, according to the police report. -- AFP
