So #garang! Recruit evades #Tekong Camp security, tries to swim back to S'pore

A gutsy Basic Military Training (BMT) recruit was caught trying to swim back to the mainland from Pulau Tekong -- a distance of 3.8 km from where he was apprehended by Police Coast Guard. The 18-year-old was spotted and picked up near Kechil Land Link last December, a narrow strip of land linking Pulau Tekong Kechil to Pulau Tekong. He has since been handed over to the authorities in BMTC. A science student from Raffles Institution, the recruit was said to have been having problems coping with NS life. He had been undergoing the Physical Training Preparatory phase of BMT, a phase designed to improve the physical fitness of recruits.
