A recruit from the Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC) on Pulau Tekong was picked up by the Police Coast Guard after attempting to swim towards Singapore. The incident happened last December. The recruit made his attempt at night, and it is unclear how far he swam before he was spotted. A Mindef spokesman said the man was found on the Kechil Land Link, between Pulau Tekong and Pulau Tekong Kechil.
