YESTERDAY'S front-page report about Singapore's return to Malaysia Cup football is the best news yet ('Singapore is back in the Malaysia Cup'). It has been a long time coming and the news certainly resonates with Singaporeans of my generation who are in our 50s or older. Some 17 years ago, we bowed out of the Malaysia Cup despite strong public sentiment against it. Most Singaporeans never quite returned to loving Singapore soccer the way they did back then. With the new move, perhaps the younger generation too can experience the glory days of Singapore soccer. And maybe we can now dream about Goal 2022, since Goal 2010 (the plan to achieve a place in the final rounds of the World Cup by last year) has lapsed.
