Petaling Jaya (The Star/ANN) - The biometric registration exercise got off to a slow start in Malaysia, with employers saying they were still unsure about certain aspects of it. The registration will first cover legal foreign workers until July 31, followed by a month-long amnesty exercise for illegal workers. Many employers said registering all the estimated 1.8 million foreign workers by the end of the month would be a tall order. The Immigration Department will be in charge of registering the legal workers while the Home Ministry has appointed 334 agents throughout the peninsula to register illegal workers from Aug 1-31. Each agent would have to rent at least two biometric machines at a cost of 14,750 ringgit (US$4,883) each (which includes a laptop computer and printer) for a month.
