Exercise to register foreign workers underway in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR : A massive operation is underway in Malaysia to register all legal foreign workers in the country. The exercise is being carried out, before an amnesty plan for illegal workers comes into effect in August. Employers have been sending their foreign workers to the KL Immigration Department to have their thumbprints taken. The whole idea is to create a database for all foreign workers in this country. Everything will be stored in a biometric system. The government has invested heavily in the system that is said to be available in all 72 checkpoints in the country. The authorities believe this not only allows them to better monitor movements of foreigners in the country, and help balance the supply and demand, but it also helps the authorities to fight transnational crime, like human trafficking.
