(CNA|sg|biz) JetStar invests US$500m in Singapore hub

SINGAPORE: Budget airline Jetstar Asia invested US$500 million in its Singapore operations to buy seven new airbus jets. They are five A320s and two A330s. The airline said it plans to expand routes for North Asia, particularly in China, as the market for low cost flights in Southeast Asia is reaching saturation, according to its group CEO Bruce Buchanan. He said: "That to us is a big signal. That it's a great opportunity as income levels continue to rise, as we put low cost carrier capacity into the markets we are going to see the same effects that we saw in Southeast Asia. " Industry observers, like Leithen Francis, asia editor of Aviation Week, viewed its China expansion plans positively due to a weak low cost carrier presence on the mainland.
