Hundreds protest Hong Kong govt's bid to scrap by-elections

HONG KONG: Hundreds of protesters, mostly mobilized by two of the city's more radical political groups, surrounded Hong Kong's Legislative Council building Wednesday, demanding the government abandon its bid to scrap by-elections. A public opinion poll conducted by Hong Kong University shows public dissatisfaction with the government has hit a 19-year high. Under the government's original proposal, if a lawmaker vacates his or her seat midterm, the seat will be filled according to previous election results, rather than hold fresh by-elections. The proposal caused quite an uproar. Critics said it was unconstitutional and that it robbed the public of its right to vote. The government's bid is a reaction to a highly publicized campaign last year in which five lawmakers resigned and then won back their seats in a by-election, which they called a referendum on universal suffrag...
