Olympics: Japan approves Tokyo 2020 bid

TOKYO: Japan's Olympic Committee on Saturday approved Tokyo's bid for the 2020 summer Games, a media report said, aiming to help the country recover from the devastating March earthquake and tsunami. The Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) endorsed Tokyo as Japan's only contender for the 2020 Games at a special executive board meeting, Jiji Press news agency said. The committee was not immediately available for comment. Tokyo's governor Shintaro Ishihara is expected to formally announce the bid at a midday reception marking the 100th anniversary of the JOC, informed sources said. International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge is to attend the reception. The head of the JOC said Friday that Tokyo was ready to bid for the 2020 games to help boost Japan's recovery from the twin disasters, which left some 21,000 people dead or missing and sparked a crisis at a nuclear po...
