Good insight into life as a reporter on the News of the World from ex Screws man Paul Gilfeather

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a journalist for the News of the World. That might shock many of you considering recent events, particularly the police investigation into phone hacking. But as a wannabe reporter, the world's biggest-selling newspaper was a Mecca for ground-breaking exclusives and investigative journalism. Legendary big-hitters like Trevor Kempson, Gerry Brown and the "fake sheikh" Mazher Mahmood would use the very latest high-tech surveillance and gadgetry, to expose villains, politicians and cheating celebrities. It made for great reading and, having long obsessed over the paper's style of journalism and techniques for getting great stories, I wanted to be part of its long, proud tradition. I was invited to the paper's Wapping headquarters in the East End of London in 1996 when, at the age of just 23, I sold them a story about the Hollywood ...
