"I WALKED around a little yesterday - it's a very interesting Art Deco neighbourhood," remarked Eric Parry when we hopped into a cab after meeting at his Tiong Bahru hotel as the architect was game to see more of Singapore's cityscape. It wasn't surprising to hear of the 59-year-old's attraction to the historical area. Parry was in town for the Future Memory Forum held at National Museum last Wednesday where issues like preservation of buildings, the role architecture and city planning play in shaping memories, as well as creating meaningful urban experiences were discussed. "I get the impression at the moment there's an uneasy divide between those who know intuitively that preservation (of buildings) is necessary and those who think preservation gets in the way of progress. But there's a lot going on here architecturally. Singapore has a real magnetism with its mercantile...
