INDIA: With fuel prices and interest rates shooting up, consumer sentiment is on a low in India. But automobile manufacturers, undeterred by the slowdown in demand, are betting big on new launches and diesel variants to rev up sales. India's auto industry grew at around 30 per cent last year. With tightening of credit and high fuel prices, the growth forecast for this year has been lowered to 12 to 13 per cent. In June, sales of passenger vehicles fell to a near two-year low of seven per cent. This has forced automobile manufacturers to review their strategies. Many carmakers are now lining up the cheaper diesel variants of their new models, in light of high petrol prices.
