Removing the alumni advantage in Pri 1 registration will be fairer for all, says our reader. Agree? #SGedu

MR HARRY NG: 'One way to bridge the gap and mitigate the disadvantage of being born into a less-educated family is to remove the alumni or alma mater advantage for Primary 1 enrolment ('A fair starting line?'; last Saturday). This is especially relevant if the alumnus (parent) has been inactive and has never contributed to his alma mater. Why should the alumnus' child benefit if the parent never felt it important enough to reciprocate what the school has done for him? Such former pupils should not be given any priority when enrolling their children for Primary 1. Removing such an unjustified advantage will go a long way towards offering a fairer starting line for all, regardless of background.'
