Malaysia ranked 'most peaceful' in South-east Asia

Malaysia has been ranked the most peaceful country in South-east Asia and the 19th safest out of 153 countries in the world in the annual Global Peace Index, reported Bernama news agency. Sydney-based Institute for Economics and Peace said that Malaysia overtook Singapore for the top place in the region last year because of "a rise in political stability and improving relations with neighbouring countries, notably Singapore and China". Singapore ranked second in South-east Asia and 24th overall, followed by Vietnam (30th overall), Laos (32nd, Indonesia (68th), Thailand (107th), Myanmar (133rd overall) and the Philippines (136th).
