IF PHYSICAL education (PE) is treated like any other academic subject, Miss Crystal Wee ('Use PE to teach students sports systematically'; Tuesday) is absolutely right in advocating a rigorous and scientific approach in the development of our young sporting talent. Unfortunately, this is the surest way of antagonising our young, most of whom will never develop anything more than a passing interest in any sport introduced to them, let alone the notion of excelling in it. Regimentation is the surest way to generate antipathy towards social sports. We used to revel in the chaos and spontaneity that characterised our weekly PE sessions in school. It was the only time we could let our hair down and be the rambunctious, unruly lot that students full of vim and vigour are wont to be. Put to a vote, PE was the favourite subject in the curriculum.
