'Tomboy' who kicked and hit kittens with umbrella walks away with $164 fine

The woman who was caught on CCTV kicking and hitting kittens with an umbrella while their mother tried to save them has been fined RM400 (S$163.44). According to a news report in AsiaOne, Chow Xiao Wei, 21, expressed remorse in court and promised she would not repeat such an act. Chow, a hawker, was sentenced to a maximum fine of RM200 in default seven days' jail for each offence. Outside the courtroom, Chow said she accepted the punishment. The offences are punishable under Section 44(1) of the Animals Act 1953 for cruelty to animals, which carries a maximum sentence of RM200 fine or six months' jail or both. Malaysian Animal Welfare Society president Shenaaz Khan said Chow should have received a jail term. The act of abuse took place in an alleyway in Serdang, Malaysia.
