Relief on the way for Bukit Panjang LRT squeeze

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew announced yesterday that the Land Transport Authority and operator SMRT will purchase 13 extra train cars. These will be put into service on the increasingly burdened line from 2014, and increase its capacity by about 50 per cent. SMRT currently has 19 train cars, and runs a maximum of 18 during peak hours in six double-car trains and six single-car trains. The extra cars are expected to cut peak hour waiting times from 2.5 minutes to 2.2 minutes between Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Panjang stations.
