ACS(I) teacher claims she was dismissed due to her age

A teacher at Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) has filed a formal complaint with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) against the school, alleging unfair dismissal. Ms Ann Phua, who was served with a 3-months advance dismissal notice on 3rd November last year, claims that she was sacked because of her age. The 59 year-old English Language teacher has been with the school since 2000 and has received letters of commendation and yearly performance bonus with no official complains about her performance. ‘It was a shock to me, as I’ve had no warning letters nor have I been put through a disciplinary inquiry.” said Ms Ann Phua in her media interview with the Straits Times. In her complaint to MOM, she said she was not given a reason for her termination. She had asked the school’s acting principal Fanny Tan why she was dismissed, but was told that the school need not provide her with ...
