Centre for Remarriage and Stepfamilies launched

SINGAPORE: The centre for Remarriage and Stepfamilies Vista Sakinah has exceeded its target of helping 600 couples from reconstituted families, even before its official launch on Saturday. Run by the Muslim Women Association of Singapore, the centre located in Woodlands Drive 44 began operations more than a year ago. The centre was first mooted in response to noticeable patterns of remarriage among the Malay community. At its launch, Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim said hopes the centre can help bring down the number of Muslim divorces involving reconstituted families. It now stands at one third of marriages. Vista Sakinah will embark on research to better assist stepfamilies ensure the marriage works. Besides plans to train the trainers, involving multi-racial social workers, PPIS Vista Sakinah will be organising a Women and Family Symposium in April.
