Health officials have identified a 56-year-old patient as the first NDM-1 superbug case on the island. The man could have contracted the bug when receiving a kidney transplant in China. Lin Ding, deputy chief at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) under the Department of Health, made the announcement at a press conference jointly held yesterday with Chang Shan-chwen, commander of the contagious disease prevention and treatment network in Taipei area. Lin said the patient in the case may have contracted the bug outside the country. He was known to have received a kidney transplant operation in Jiangxi Province in southeastern China in October 2010. The man returned to Taiwan later that month and was treated at a hospital for lower abdominal pain. He was soon diagnosed as having contracted the bacteria after being hospitalized.
