'Safe and Bright Homes' for needy

SINGAPORE - Some 1,000 needy families and elderly people in the western parts of Singapore will soon have cheaper utility bills, with the help of energy-efficient devices in their homes. Some $150,000 worth of energy-saving light bulbs and table lamps, safety gadgets and water conservation equipment are being given to these residents of three-room flats. The yearly cost savings are an estimated $100 for each household. The initiative also aims to provide elder-friendly tools, such as a remote-controlled lighting system, to frail and aged residents. The South West Community Development Council and partners Philips Singapore, Institute of Technical Education College West and South West grassroots organisations hope to provide better lighting for elderly residents' daily activities and needy children studying at home.
