Contextual ads: Everyone, click 'Like'

Sixteen time zones away, snatches of a panel discussion on ordering pizzas had yanked me from my jet-lag stupor to focus my mind on a hairy issue: Should I be impressed by an online advertisement to remove body hair? The discussion on contextual media was a parallel track to the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show 2011. A fairly distinguished panel had gathered to talk about how media, advertisers and content creators are now managing a complex universe containing millions of individual preferences. The talk turned to the topic of contextual advertising, now regarded as something of a Holy Grail for Silicon Valley. It is a tech parlance which basically means displaying ads on a website based on the content shown to the user.
