SINGAPORE: In Singapore, the likelihood of surviving a heart attack outside a hospital is three per cent, but doctors say this can be improved if more people are trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). As part of efforts to mark Singapore's first National Life Saving Day on Sunday, 7,000 people signed up to do just that. Every year, about 1,400 people collapse on the street from cardiac arrest. While there's a one in five chance that they'll get help, in Singapore only three per cent -- an average of 42 people -- survive, compared to cities like Seattle, where the rate is 30 per cent. Jonathan Koh, a 19-year-old student who took part in the National Life Saving Day event, said that with CPR skills, he would be able to help someone suffering from a heart attack, instead of standing helplessly by his side.
