Welfarism not the way to go

I DISAGREE with yesterday's rosy but incomplete view of welfare benefits provided by countries like France and Sweden ('Time for stork-taking on baby issue'). Political correspondent Li Xueying praises their generous policies but neglects to describe how these nations foot the hefty bills. Neither was it explained that these governments impose expensive value added tax (VAT) in addition to collecting income tax. While my child enjoyed a free preschool education between ages three and six when we lived in France, I did not view the education as genuinely 'free'. We paid a hellish amount in taxes for such welfare benefits. Perhaps The Straits Times should investigate the additional taxes that need to be imposed on Singaporeans which will let the public enjoy the level of welfarism France and Sweden offer.
