Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew: Clan associations can help new immigrants with English #sgpolitics

SINGAPORE: Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has said clan associations need to adapt to stay relevant to new immigrants from China. Citing an example, he said they can help new immigrants master English and integrate into society. He was speaking at a dialogue at the 25th anniversary of the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan associations on Tuesday. Clan associations were first set up to provide support and welfare for immigrants from China. To carve a role for themselves in modern Singapore, Mr Lee said they need to change and find new ways to connect with the differing needs of today's immigrants. Mr Lee spoke in both Mandarin and English during the one-hour dialogue. Mr Lee said: "The immigrants that come now, most of them are from the north of the Yangtze, so your clan associations do not fit in with them.
