SINGAPORE: Many parents welcome the move to inject more interactivity into mother tongue classes. But, while they agree with the need to bring everyday application into lessons, some have doubts over how the subject will be taught and tested. The Phee family converses mostly in English. Chinese language enrichment classes, which the children have attended since they were three years old, help them cope in school. Despite scoring well, it's not a subject they like. Phee Shayne, a Primary 3 student at St Hilda's Primary School, said: "I don't like Chinese because writing the words is hard, and speaking in Chinese is very complicated. Because sometimes it's very hard to pronounce some Chinese words, and sometimes you get the words wrong. It's very embarrassing when you get the words wrong."
