Donations, volunteerism up last year - TODAYonline

SINGAPORE - Going by the yardstick of donations collected and volunteerism rates, Singapore appears to have a caring community. Last year, donations crossed the $1-billion threshold while the volunteerism rate rose above the 20-per-cent mark for the first time. However, while the Republic led in collecting money compared to the United States and the United Kingdom, it lagged behind in the giving of time, Singapore Indian Development Association chief executive T Raja Segar said yesterday. "Giving time is probably a closer proxy to see whether we do care for the fellow citizen. That's probably why I think caring from a distance is a more appropriate title (for Singapore)," he added.
