ALGIERS - A WOMAN in Algeria became the sixth person in a week in the country to set herself on fire in replica of immolation protests that ousted the president of neighbouring Tunisia, media said on Wednesday. The woman, in her fifties, soaked herself with an inflammable product and tried to set herself on fire when a local official convinced her to stop, the El Watan daily reported, adding that she wounded only her hand as a result. She was protesting in front of the townhall in Sidi Ali Benyoub, south-west of Algiers, after being denied housing aid, the newspaper added. The attempted public suicide is the sixth in a week in Algeria, where mounting public grievances over rising costs and unemployment triggered protests earlier this month that left five people dead and over 800 injured.
