New eco-friendliness certification for food courts

SINGAPORE - The Singapore Environment Council (SEC) has launched a new certification scheme to facilitate food court operators here to adopt environmentally sustainable practices. At the launch yesterday, SEC executive director Howard Shaw said: "We have food courts in our commercial spaces and in our heartlands. Overall, (they contribute) significantly to resource consumption in terms of electricity, water and waste generation. So, by creating a shift in the way food courts operate, we feel we can make a significant contribution to our national environmental statistics." The certification assesses a food court's environmental management system - from its environmental policies to water, energy and waste management.
