PHNOM PENH - A court has convicted five Thais of illegally entering Cambodia in a high-profile case. The Thais, including Democrat Member of Parliament Panich Vikitsreth, were given suspended sentences and ordered freed. The five received prison sentences on Friday of nine months each but were credited with time already served and the remainder suspended. They were fined one million riels ($314) each and allowed to return to Thailand. Earlier, the five gave testimony that they had no intention to trespass on Cambodian soil. They argued that they did not know they had entered a restricted zone as signs in the area were written in Cambodian, the Bangkok Post reported. The group was arrested on Dec 29 after crossing into north-western Banteay Meanchey province on charges of illegal entry and trespassing in a military zone.
