PHOENIX (AP) - The organization that sets safety standards for athletic equipment has awarded nearly $610,000 toward concussion research and created an advisory committee to study concussions. Board members for the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment on Saturday approved a new research grant of nearly $340,000 to study concussion biomechanics and a second year of funding for three other studies related to concussions. Helmets used in the NFL - and NCAA or high school football - are supposed to pass a voluntary test developed by the group. The board of the nonprofit corporation determined Friday that more research was needed before making recommendations for new or revised standards on football helmets.
